What is a National VIN Check?
A National VIN Check is an Australian vehicle history report that combines a PPSR finance check, a NEVDIS identity and registration lookup, a written-off vehicle (WOVR) search, and a national stolen-vehicle check into a single PDF report. You can search by number plate (rego) or by the 17-character VIN for any car, motorbike, caravan, truck, ute or trailer registered anywhere in Australia. The data is queried live from official government registers at the moment you order — the same sources banks, insurers and road authorities rely on — not scraped or estimated.
The report is often called a "REVS check" out of habit. REVS (the Register of Encumbered Vehicles) was the old state-based finance register, and it was folded into the national Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) on 30 January 2012. A modern REVS check is simply a PPSR check, and National VIN Check searches the live PPSR nationwide — so it covers vehicles from every state and territory, not just the one where the car is currently registered.
Why check a vehicle's history before you buy
Buying a used car privately in Australia carries real financial and safety risk, and most of it is invisible when you inspect the vehicle in person:
- Money owing follows the car, not the seller. Under the Personal Property Securities Act 2009, if a vehicle has finance registered against it and that debt isn't discharged, the lender can legally repossess it — even after you've paid the seller in full. A PPSR check reveals any security interest before you hand over money.
- Written-off vehicles can hide structural damage. The WOVR records statutory and repairable write-offs. A repaired write-off may look perfect but carry compromised safety, insurance and resale implications.
- Stolen cars can be seized without compensation. If a vehicle is listed on the national stolen register, police can recover it from you and you lose both the car and the money you paid.
- Identity and registration mismatches signal fraud. Confirming the make, model, year, colour and registration status against NEVDIS helps you spot re-birthed or misrepresented vehicles.

A VIN check uses the Vehicle Identification Number to look up a vehicle's identity, registration, and history. A PPSR check specifically searches the Personal Property Securities Register — a national government database — to reveal any finance encumbrances, chattel mortgages, or security interests registered against the vehicle. Effectively, yes. Finding your VIN
The VIN is a 17-character alphanumeric code unique to every vehicle. You'll find it on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield from outside), the driver's door jamb sticker, the engine bay firewall, or on the vehicle's registration papers. If you can't find it, you can also search by the vehicle's rego plate — National VIN Check accepts either.
